What to Do About a Fallen or Storm-Damaged Tree

A fallen or storm-damaged tree can turn a familiar garden into a hazardous area within minutes. The first priority is not tidying debris but keeping people away from unstable branches, a moving root plate, damaged structures or electricity lines. Once immediate risks are controlled, an assessment can establish whether the whole tree must be removed, part can be retained and how the garden should be repaired. This guide explains what to do next and when professional help is appropriate.

Make the area safe before inspecting the damage

Keep people and pets well away from the tree, including the area beneath split or hanging branches. A trunk resting on a wall, shed or another tree may be carrying considerable stored force. It can roll, settle or spring when cut. An exposed root plate can also move back towards its original position without warning. Do not climb onto the timber or pull branches to test whether they are secure.

From a safe distance, look for broken cables, leaning poles, damaged structures and branches suspended above paths or neighbouring property. If a road or public footpath is affected, prevent access where it is safe to do so and contact the appropriate emergency or local authority service. Call emergency services where there is an immediate threat to life.

Photograph the scene without approaching the hazard. Views showing the tree’s position, property damage and surrounding conditions can help a contractor understand access and may support an insurance enquiry. Avoid clearance until any relevant insurer has advised what evidence it needs, unless urgent work is necessary to remove a danger.

What to do when a fallen or storm-damaged tree affects power lines

Treat every fallen or damaged electricity wire as live. Stay well back, keep others away and never touch the tree, a fence or anything that may contact the line. ESB Networks advises calling 1800 372 999 immediately when a tree is leaning on lines or damaged branches are on or over them. Do not try to cut or remove the timber yourself.

Even if no cable is visibly broken, a tree close to overhead equipment requires specialist coordination. ESB Networks says trees and hedges within six metres of electricity equipment should not be cut without contacting it first. The work can then be planned around the electrical hazard instead of treated as ordinary clearance.

Assess what has failed and what may still move

Storm damage is not always obvious. A standing tree may have a split union, twisted crown, torn roots or new lean. Cracks can open as the canopy moves, while broken limbs may remain caught overhead. Saturated soil after prolonged Irish rain can reduce root anchorage, especially where drainage is poor or roots were previously disturbed.

A proper inspection considers the tree’s species, size and condition; the direction and extent of failure; nearby buildings and boundaries; and what another fall could strike. It should distinguish recent damage from older decay. Fungal brackets, cavities and dead wood can matter, but their significance depends on position and extent. One symptom does not automatically mean every remaining part must be felled.

Where only a branch has failed, selective pruning may produce a safe, balanced crown. A badly split main stem, severe root-plate movement or extensive failure may make dismantling necessary. The decision should reflect the remaining structure and future risk, not simply the appearance of the debris.

Plan professional dismantling, access and site protection

Chainsawing storm-felled timber is particularly dangerous because branches can be under compression and tension. A cut in the wrong position can trap the saw or release timber suddenly. Ladders are unsuitable around broken crowns, while pulling a lodged branch with a vehicle can transfer the load unpredictably. Professional work uses a planned cutting sequence, exclusion zone and suitable equipment.

Access affects how the work is organised. A contractor needs to know gate widths, steps, narrow passages, overhead lines, conservatories and areas where machinery cannot travel. On wet ground, heavy equipment may rut lawns or compact soil, so boards, smaller machinery or hand removal may be appropriate. Drains, inspection chambers and underground services should be identified before loads are moved or a stump is tackled.

Branches can be chipped and larger timber cut into manageable sections. Some wood may be retained for logs if stored safely and seasoned; unsuitable material should be removed responsibly. Where a protected tree, shared boundary or wildlife issue is involved, check relevant permissions before non-emergency work. Immediate safety work and later remedial work may need separate decisions.

Decide what to retain, remove and repair

Once the tree is stable, agree the finished condition rather than treating clearance as the only goal. Decisions include:

  • whether a sound portion can remain after corrective pruning;
  • whether the stump should be left, ground or excavated;
  • how damaged fencing, paving, sheds or planting will be made safe;
  • where chippings, logs and green waste will go; and
  • how disturbed soil and exposed roots will be reinstated.

Stump grinding is often less disruptive than excavating the root system, but the right choice depends on access and the area’s next use. A future patio, shed base or planting position may require a different depth of work. Removing the visible stump without considering roots, drainage and settlement can create later problems.

Do not fill a root-plate hole with loose organic debris, which decomposes and can leave a depression. Unsuitable material may need removing, with soil placed and consolidated in layers. Surface falls should direct rainwater away from paving and foundations.

Restore the garden and reduce future storm risk

After a fallen or storm-damaged tree is dealt with, inspect nearby trees for newly exposed crowns, torn branches and changes in shelter. A tree previously protected by its neighbour may now receive stronger wind. Corrective pruning should preserve a natural, stable form; heavy topping can encourage weak regrowth and create another problem.

Review drainage, soil level and root damage before replanting. A replacement may not belong in exactly the same spot, especially near foundations, services or tight boundaries. Choose a species whose mature size suits the space. Establishment watering, mulch kept clear of the stem and early structural pruning can help it develop well.
